From Skin to Self-Esteem: Unexpected Benefits of Strength Training for Weight Loss

As I’ve journeyed through my own fitness and beauty routine, I’ve discovered the incredible, unexpected benefits strength training can offer, especially for women over 40. Did you know that weight lifting isn’t just about building muscles? It’s a powerhouse for boosting self-esteem, improving skin elasticity, and obviously aiding in weight loss. With age, it becomes even more crucial to incorporate strength training into our lives – not just for the physical benefits, like long, lean muscles and fitting fabulously into our favourite clothes, but also for the empowerment and confidence it brings. Read on – I’m excited to share the importance of strength training for women and how it can transform your life in ways you might never have imagined.

If you had told me a few years ago that lifting weights would change not just my body, but my confidence, my skin, and my entire outlook on aging, I might have laughed. Like many women over 40 (I’m now 56), I spent years focused on cardio, trying to “burn off” calories and keep the number on the scale down. But something shifted as I dove deeper into my own beauty and fitness journey. I discovered that strength training isn’t just for bodybuilders or twenty-somethings at the gym – it’s for us. And the benefits? Way more than just physical, as I talk about in this post HERE.

Let’s start with the obvious: weight loss. As we age, our metabolism naturally slows down, and muscle mass begins to decline. Strength training helps reverse that. By building lean muscle, we burn more calories at rest – yes, even while binge-watching Netflix or working at our desks. It’s a more efficient, sustainable way to support a healthy weight without relying solely on restrictive diets or endless cardio sessions.

But what truly surprised me was how strength training affected my skin. After a few months of consistent workouts, I noticed a difference in my skin’s firmness and glow. There’s real science behind this – strength training increases blood circulation and collagen production, which can improve skin tone and elasticity. That healthy, lit-from-within look we’re all after? Turns out, it doesn’t just come from serums – it comes from squats too.

Then there’s the emotional transformation. As women, we’re often taught to shrink ourselves – physically, emotionally, even socially. Strength training taught me the opposite. Each time I added weight to the bar or completed a challenging set, I felt more empowered. It’s not about lifting the heaviest dumbbells in the gym; it’s about showing up for yourself, getting stronger week by week, and watching that inner confidence spill into every other area of life.

And let’s not forget the pure, unapologetic joy of clothes fitting better. There’s nothing quite like slipping into a favourite dress and feeling fabulous – not because you’ve “lost weight,” but because you’re sculpted, strong, and standing tall. Long, lean muscle has a way of reshaping your silhouette, giving your body a lifted, youthful appearance that no crash diet or GLP medication can match.

So if you’ve been hesitant to pick up a pair of dumbbells, I encourage you – start small. You don’t need fancy equipment or hours at the gym. Bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, or a simple at-home routine can do wonders. What matters is consistency and tuning into how your body feels.

This journey has reminded me that beauty isn’t about perfection – it’s about power. It’s about feeling strong in your own skin, celebrating what your body can do, and aging with grace and grit.

Strength training gave me that. And I promise – it can give it to you too.
