For generations, there has been a quiet, invisible roadmap laid out for us as we age.
In my own South Asian community, (I’m Indian), we see it clearly. There is a certain point where a woman is expected to “pivot.” To move from the centre of the frame to the background. To trade her vibrancy (and her vibrant saris) for more “subdued” tones, her personal ambitions for the role of the selfless elder, and her physical strength for a delicate, quiet grace.
We see this echoed in so many beautiful, traditional cultures – whether you are Greek, Middle Eastern, Italian, or Desi. There is a collective pressure to become “smaller” as we get older. We are told to “slow down,” to “take it easy,” and to accept that our time of high-performance – both in how we look and how we move – is behind us.
But I’m here to tell you: That script is outdated. And we are the ones holding the pen now.
The Strength of Our Heritage
I want to be clear: this isn’t about rejecting our culture. I love my heritage. I cherish the wisdom of the women who came before me. My mother and grandmother navigated their lives with a strength I admire deeply.
But their strength was often about endurance, submitting and aquiescing to someone else’s script.
Ours can be about expansion.
We can honour our roots while picking up a barbell. We can respect our elders while demanding to be seen as vibrant, sexual, strong, and capable human beings in our 40s, 50s and beyond.
The Bare Truth of Midlife
Let’s talk about the “bare truths” we often whisper about but rarely confront:
-
The Estrogen Exit: Menopause isn’t just “hot flushes.” It’s a systemic shift that affects our bone density, our muscle mass, and our skin’s structural integrity.
-
The Cultural Weight: We are often the “sandwich generation,” caring for aging parents and growing children, often at the expense of our own physical and mental health.
-
The Visibility Gap: The beauty industry has ignored us for decades, and our own communities often stop “seeing” us as individuals once we reach “Auntie” status.
Why “Backbone” Matters
When I talk about Beauty with Backbone, (my new mantra), I’m talking about a two-fold strength.
-
Physical Backbone: We need to lift. Not to “bulk up” (the great midlife myth), but to protect our bones. To keep our metabolism firing. To ensure that we can carry our own groceries, our own grandchildren, and our own weight for the next thirty years.
-
Internal Backbone: We need the mental strength to say “No” to the expectations that don’t serve us. To invest in clinical skincare that actually works because we value ourselves. To take up space in the gym and in the boardroom.
Rewriting the Future
Our mothers followed a path that was paved for them. They did the best they could with the tools they had. But we have science. We have community. We have the internet. And we have the realization that “aging gracefully” doesn’t have to mean aging quietly.
If you’re feeling that tug—that feeling that you aren’t ready to fade out just yet—know that you aren’t alone. Whether you’re starting your first strength training program or finally investing in a skincare routine that makes you feel like you again, you are part of a revolution.
We aren’t just aging; we are levelling up.
It’s time to show the world exactly what a Desi woman (or any woman, for that matter) with backbone looks like.
