Autumn is my favorite season for fashion, and now that the end of August is winking at us, it’s time to start thinking about putting away the summer’s strapless dresses and start planning your Autumn (Fall) wardrobe.
So I’ve put together my key picks that I’ll be wearing on repeat and that I know I’ll get my money’s worth from. No doubt I’ll be adding to this list as the stores release new items, but I’m trying to be good this year and not buy too much – only those pieces that I know will stand the test of time and really give me my cost per wear. THE TRENCH
Name me something that’s as classic and perennial as a trench. I’ll wait.
No, but seriously, if you don’t have a trench in your wardrobe, you’re missing out. The perfect cover for seasonal showers, a coat for when it’s not actually cold but you just need that extra layer, and whether you’re wearing it over a smart or casual outfit, it always makes you look put together. I prefer mine to be with a hood, but without looks just as good. I invested in this Burberry one a couple of years ago and I still love it, but you can find so many good versions on the high street too.
THE TAN BAG
A good tan bag is not just for autumn; it can, and will, carry you through all the seasons. But there’s something about the season that just makes us want to wear all the shades of brown and tan. Perhaps it’s the beautiful colour changing of the leaves on the trees. Who knows? What I do know is that if ever you were going to carry a tan bag, then this is the season to do it. My dream bag is my Hermes Gold Birkin 30cm (the shade name Gold refers to the tan colour): it’s the perfect size to carry all my stuff around with me all day for work, but it also makes for the perfect accessory for casual and social engagements too. An investment, for sure, but one that will last and last.
THE BROWN BOOTS
When going through my wardrobe to pull out items for the new season, I couldn’t believe I didn’t have any brown boots. I think I knew somewhere in the back of my mind I’d been meaning to get some, so when I saw these Tods ones go on sale just in time, and in my size, I didn’t hesitate. The sumptuous chocolate brown shade of suede will take you through Fall and right into the depths of winter, while the rubber sole and lace-up detailing make them so comfortable… now I wish I’d bought them in tan too!
THE DENIM JACKET
Again, another classic that is not only timeless but seasonless too. Perfect for those in-between days when the weather doesn’t really know what it’s doing and you just don’t know to dress. I had three or four denim jackets, but I don’t think any of them did me any favours, so I’ve donated them all to charity and I’ll be buying one that I think will tick all the boxes. This one from ACNE is just that. The perfect hue of blue, classic detailing, and a lovely oversized look that will look just as great slung over a dress as it will worn with jeans and trousers.
THE WHITE SHIRT
You can never have too many white shirts, in my opinion, and while you know I’m a huge lover of a lacy white shirt, there’s something special about the pared-back look of a classic, collared white shirt. (Tucked into blue jeans, in case you’re wondering, is my favourite way to wear it). This one from Arket is affordable and has just the right styling to make it ‘now’, with its shaped hem, little collar and wide sleeves.
