It’s normally around this time of year that you see all the ‘New Year, New You’ type of posts; you know the ones I mean… “make a fresh start”, “make yourself a whole long list of New Year resolutions”, “make yourself a better version of yourself”, blah blah blah. I mean, I’ve written posts like that over the years, both in this blog and for various other websites and magazines in my freelance writing work. We are so used to it now, we almost expect it. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. It’s human nature to constantly want to better yourself. But.
What if you don’t want to set a whole list of new year resolutions, a game plan for goals to achieve. What if you’re just not feeling it?
Here’s the thing. There’s nothing wrong with not wanting to reinvent yourself, with not going crazy setting new goals and plans and aims and not going on a diet and not talking about journalling and not talking about learning a new language and and and…
It’s okay to just want to stay the same. It’s okay to sometimes just stay in your own personal status quo. And especially with the year we’ve just had, and the months still to go through, it’s okay to just want to stay the same. Sometimes, it’s okay to just want to survive. Sometimes, it’s just about getting through and staying sane.
celebrate the small wins
Rather than laying down a whole host of expectations and then berating ourselves for falling short of these goals, let’s make 2021 the year that we just celebrate the small wins, each and every one of them, whenever they come along. I’m not even going to list any examples, because everyone will have different wins to celebrate and I don’t want to hold up anything as something to aim for…my wins will be personal to me, yours to you.
With each and every small win, you build yourself up, you build your confidence, your self-esteem and your ideas of what could be possible for you. All of which feeds into the bigger picture of you and, who knows, perhaps even some bigger goals that you didn’t dare to dream right now?
And hey, each to their own. If you already have some blue-sky projects to aim for, good on you – I’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines and wishing you all the success… whilst working on my own small wins every day.
