Beauty books are a bit of a compulsion for me – even a cursive glance at just a few of my stash will attest to that. Who doesn’t love the glossy, hardback coffee table book, full of bright young things looking impossibly, perfectly glamourous? As inspiration, there’s not much that comes close. But when all’s said and done, how many of them are actually useful? As in, you refer to them on a daily or weekly basis, your go-to for information and advice?
That’s why I’m loving Sali Hughes’ new book, Pretty Honest: Your Straight-Talking Beauty Companion. Firm but friendly, to-the-point, no-nonsense advice from a beauty addict who’s put her 20-something years experience in the industry into this book. Advice that’s real and actionable, problem solving yet compassionate, this is real beauty, not some glossy idealised (and quite frankly, unattainable) version of it.
Published yesterday, I couldn’t stop myself reading it through from cover to cover – Sali’s frank yet funny approach to beauty is refreshing and heartwarming. This is not a book that advocates you spend half your day beautifying yourself. This is a proper “how to” – how to fit in beauty around your life and whatever else is going on, whether you’re in the throes of motherhood, your teenage years or looking for a very real approach to anti ageing.
I can’t think of a better present for any woman you know, be it your grandma, your mother, your aunt or your daughter (hint hint, Christmas is just around the corner!)
