If you took a look at our kitchen cupboards, you’d think we were opening a supplement store. We have just about anything and everything you could think of. L-Carnatine? Got it. EFA capsules? Yup. Pycogenol? But of course! Even things I’ve never heard of like Berberine and something called Ache-Free…it’s all there, clogging up my cupboards and gathering dust. So you’ll excuse me if I’m a little jaded and sceptical when a new supplement promises the earth.
You see, we’re very good at identifying which supplements we “need” but never that good at taking them. (There are a few, however, that I can’t and wouldn’t live without – comment below if you want a post on those or click here to tweet me). So it’s rare that I really get to see the difference any given supplement will make.
Recently, however, I was lucky enough to be offered the Lumity supplements that have been taking the health and beauty world by storm. Now, the last thing I needed was yet more supplements, but something about the concept intrigued me, so I decided to give it a go and be faithful to the whole month course that I was sent. I waited until I was was on holiday to start the course as it was a four-week break (yes, I know I’m a very lucky girl) and I knew I’d stick to it.
Let’s cut to the chase. Lumity is a two step supplement programme, based on the premise that your body performs different functions during the day and at night, so the supplements support these different body processes, working around the clock to work with the body’s natural cycles. Three brown soft-gel capsules in the morning, three white ones in the evening promise better sleep cycles, more energy through the day, advanced anti-ageing benefits, softer, clearer, more youthful skin and a whole host of others.
Priced at £85 for a month’s supply, these represent a substantial investment in your health and wellbeing, (although actually, if you think about it, it’s less than the price of a daily Starbucks), so what you really want to know is, did they work for me?
I can honestly say, hand on heart, I was amazed at the result. Not only did I feel better, my husband, who rarely notices much, has been commenting on how well I look and and how he’s seen changes. And he’s normally more sceptical than me!
Where do I start?
I had so much energy, I even took a week-long windsurfing course!
Being on holiday, we slept *ahem* a little too late every night, but after about four days, I woke up every morning refreshed and ready to go. Usually, in that Southern Spanish heat, I’m lethargic everyday and my family have got used to me not wanting to do much of anything while I’m on holiday. This year, I was in the pool every day and had so much energy, I even took a week-long windsurfing course! Now, that’s never happened before.
Given that I’ve been in the sun and sea for month, you’d expect my skin to be a little parched, a little dehydrated and in need of some serious TLC. But to my surprise, my children have been commenting on “how soft your skin feels, mama” and I can’t disagree with them. The skin on my shins is substantially softer and smoother, and on my elbows too – the two places I normally show poor skin health. And it’s not just my body-skin. I haven’t had the usual breakouts in the week before my period. My face looks younger somehow; my skin seems to be plumper and pores size appear smaller – I know you can’t actually make them shrink, but they just appear so, and makeup sits better on my skin.
While we’re on that, I’m wearing less and less makeup – by the end of the holiday it was literally just mascara and tinted lip balm – of course, having a tan helps, but even now as I write this and the tan is fading fast, my skin is still keeping up its end of the bargain. I’m going without highlighter (shock, horror), as my skin is looking radiant and luminous. In this photo on my instagram (click here) I’m wearing a light coverage of foundation and concealer, but there’s no highlighter (and no photoshop or filter).
Lastly, and this is one of the main reasons I want to continue taking the little capsules. I’ve been on a mission to lose those last stubborn pounds (I want to say ‘last few stubborn pounds’, but sadly, it’s more than just a few!). Eating right and exercising has been key to my routine, but I’ve tended to just stay at the same weight. I’m not sure if it’s down to Lumity, but I’ve found that since I’ve been taking them, I’ve managed to lose a few kilos, even while I was on holiday and admittedly a little lax on the food front.
I’m not going to see a new me overnight. It takes time to re-balance the body.
Obviously, one can’t expect miracles. I’m not going to see a new me overnight. Just like I can’t (healthily) lose all my excess weight during a crash course two-week diet if I’ve slowly put it on over a number of years, it takes time to re-balance the body where there may be deficiencies. In fact, patients have reported seeing the most difference during the second and third month so the longer you take them, the better you’ll look and feel. It’s a cumulative effect.
Now I know you’ll want a little of the science, so without getting too complicated (you can always head to the Lumity website for more details), here’s my potted version:
By putting together a very unique combinations of vitamins, minerals and amino acids, Lumity address all 9 causes of ageing in the body.
The brown morning capsules contain a precise combination of vitamins, minerals and amino acids including Vitamin A, zinc, magnesium, carnatine, antioxidants and Co-enzyme Q10 to boost cell functions during the day. All of which aids energy levels, collagen and elastin formation, oxidative damage reparation, DNA protection and boosts your immune system.
The evening capsules contains a mixture of flaxseed oil and amino acids ranging from Lysine to L-Arginine to reinforce the anti-glycation and antioxidant effects of the morning’s ingredients. Crucially, they also stimulate the Human Growth Hormone, so important in building muscle, healthy tissue and improving bone density.
I’m continuing with taking Lumity for at least another two months, to hopefully see the full effects, so expect a little update from me after that. Who knows, by that time, my husband may well be taking Lumity too, so impressed is he with the changes he’s seeing in me. I’ll keep you posted.
