What is it about American/Canadian makeup artists and their makeup collections that gets me so very excited? The latest brand to cross the pond to over here in the UK comes from Jay Manuel, the Canadian celebrity makeup artist whose work you’ve seen just about everywhere and also as a judge on America’s Next Top Model.
His collection launches on QVC at midnight tonight, and it’s such an exciting one as it’s the first time EVER that a beauty brand has launched with a TSV on the channel (TSV is the Today’s Special Value that, when it comes to beauty brands, is normally a collection of products at a very special price).
I’ve had a chance to trial some of the products before they launch, and was even lucky enough to have my makeup done my Frank Guyton, a celebrity makeup artist who has worked with Jay right from the very beginning of Jay’s makeup line.
The brand uses cutting-edge Filter Finish technology and is seriously high-performance – perfect for the true makeup lover and novice alike. Ingredients such as diamond dust, crushed gemstones and micronised silk make it easy to achieve a professional finish. But beware, these products are highly pigmented: a little goes a long way, and the staying power is just crazy! Even without powder or primer, I managed to get through a whole day without having to touch up, and the red lipstick stayed put through dinner and beyond.

In the photos, I’m wearing Filter Finish Skin Perfecting Foundation which comes in 10 shades (the shade I was sent is slightly too dark for me, but I just about made it work as I still have my summer tan; I’m wearing shade Deep Filter 2, but could probably do better with Deep 1 or Medium 4). I’m wearing Photo Illusion Concealer in the shade Cocoa, (again, I think I’ll soon have to dial it down to the lighter shade once the tan fades). Both these base products are a dream to wear – no powder and they still look good. I hate powdering under my eyes as I always find it looks cakey on me, so I love this concealer as it really doesn’t need setting. The foundation, whilst not totally matte, doesn’t leave you with shiny skin, just a nice velvety finish and feels super light on the skin – you’re not even aware you’re wearing a high-performance foundation containing Vitamins A, C and E. And I’m all about the dewy, glowy look rather than totally matte skin for everyday – I find a matte face can be quite ageing, dewy so much more youthful.
Sadly, I did’t have any of the beautiful eyeshadow quartets to try, so make sure to check back for a future review of those, but I’m totally in love with the Soft Focus Powder Blush in the shade Tease – so much so, it’s gone straight into my daily makeup rotation. Again, highly pigmented, so just a tiny amount is enough to add a beautiful flush to the cheeks (and I’ve cheekily used a little as eyeshadow too!)
Jay is all about the innovation, and the Everything Mascara has an adjustable and retractable wand to really help make the most of your lashes. Just by twisting the wand, you can go from full, fat bristles for volume to a longer wand to emphasise the length. The bristles really grip the lashes too, which I love, as I always find this helps to lay down more of the product (and you know me by now guys, when it comes to lashes, more is always more!).
The Ultimate Lipstick, available in three shades, is one of my favourite products from the range. Matte yet not drying, it’s more of a satin matte with a slight sheen. Super-pigmented, just one swipe is enough to fully coat the lips and it feels so comfortable on. It lasts and lasts, too – all through the afternoon though copious amounts of green tea and through dinner. I’m wearing the shade Deep Red over Mac’s Soar lipliner – bright enough to command attention but still very wearable for everyday.
It’s all available on the QVCUK.com website now, but the live shows will start at midnight tonight. The TSV only last for 24 hours, and I’m prepared to say it will probably sell out, so make sure to take a look, or watch the channel tomorrow (SKY 650, Virgin 740).
Oh, and I almost forgot – theres an amazing new Powder-to-Cream Foundation (yes, you read that right!), coming in a couple of months, so keep your peeled for that one too – I’ve tried it and it’s incredible – unlike anything you’ve ever tried before!
