It’s no secret that I’m beyond hopeless at doing my hair – from washing to treating, taming to styling, I’m just all thumbs. But that doesn’t stop me from trying, and trying and trying again. So I thought I’d share with you some of the products that I love, love love. I’m mixing it up – drugstore and high end – whichever I love the most, it’s going into the list – but definitely give me your suggestions in the comments below – I’m hoping to having a shopping list by the time you guys are done with this!
So here goes:
Best shampoos/conditioners for coloured hair – One nomination, one winner (for my hair colour, obviously!): Daniel Galvin Junior Organics King of Colour Glossy Brunettes Shampoo & Conditioner – I’m loving this for the shine and gloss it gives. It’s super moisturising too, although that’s not what I bought it for and the results are always reliable. A fab drugstore option.
Best shampoos/conditioners for fine hair – Two winners here, at different price points. L’Oreal Elvive Fibrology Shampoo & Conditioner – Another great drugstore option that I tried this my friend’s house and I’ve been meaning to buy ever since. It literally thickens the hair from the first wash and condition, without making it feel dry and brittle. Sensai’s Volumising Shampoo & Conditioner is a beautiful choice too, if you have a little more cash to flash. It smells divine and volumises as it seriously conditions too.
Best shampoo/conditioner for dry hair – Fantastic Hairdresser Salon Collection Nourishing Duo – This drugstore option is pretty new to me, but I’ve loved it from the first try. There are so many others that I love in this category, (Philip Kingsley Remoisturising Duo, I’m looking at you). I feel bad not to mention them – so definitely check out my hair care video (click here) which talks about some others that I love.
Best Treatment Oils: So many that I want to mention here, and given that I live for my oils I hope you’ll forgive me for including more than a few. I’ve been brought up on hair oils (Indian girls invariably are), so although I don’t do coconut oil (too heavy for my hair) I love anything Vatika do – the Olive, Almond and the Cactus Oil options are always hanging around the house. Good quality pure Argan oil is difficult to get hold of, so I’m an ongoing huge fan of Kahina’s Argan Oil. I’m currently loving Touche by Flavien’s Oil Serum (read my rave about that here), which seems to combine the best of all the Indian oils in one blend. A great drugstore option is Melvita’s Macadamia Oil – intensely moisturising, easily absorbed and smells deliciously nutty (if you like that sort of thing). And can I also talk about the Joico L-Pak Revitaluxe Bio-Advanced Restorative Treatment that I raved about here – literally just one use and my hair was frizz-free, moisturised, shiny….pefection.
Best Styling Oils, Here again, I’m a woman obsessed. I’m still loving HER Haircare’s Nourishing Oil for post-wash, pre-blowdry smoothness, Kerastase’s Elixir Ultime and L’Oreal Elvive’s Extraordinary Oil for Coloured Hair all deserve worthy mentions, but my current fave of all is SHOW Beauty Pure Treatment Oil. Not only does it look beyond beautiful on my dressing table, it’s great for taming frizz, smoothing and sleeking out hair and it also contains great thermal protection – there’s nothing I love as much as a multi-tasker!
Best Masks: The clear winner here for me has to be Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer – I’m nearly through my 1-litre vat of the stuff, with a couple more 1-litre bottles waiting in the wings (what? I have two girls with hair down to their waists – we GO THROUGH this like crazy)! My hairdresser always uses the Moroccan Oil Mask on me, so I have mention that too, and I still go back to my Alterna Caviar Repair and HER Haircare Trecento Masks too. For me, a mask is all about replacing moisture, undoing the damage I do with heat and colour and generally saying a weekly “sorry” to my hair.
Best Heat Protector: L’Oreal Elnett Heat Protect Spray – Basically it does what it says on the tin; hair is less frizzy when I use it, so I can’t ask for more than that. But as I said in this video all about hair here, it does make the bathroom floor into a very dangerously sloppy ice-rink, so SHOW Beauty’s Thermal Protect Spray has become my go-to – it smells divine and goes on great to dry hair if you’re restyling, without wetting down the hair too much. Their Pure Treatment Oil makes another appearance here for it’s themal protect properties (gotta love that multitasking!)
Best Volumising Products – Oribe’s Dry Texturising Spray is just magic in a bottle or should that be backcombing in a bottle. There’s no white powdery finish, just a fabulous texture at the roots or even at the ends if that’s what you want. Charles Worthington’s Volume & Bounce Texturising Spray is basically a drugstore version of the same thing, but this thing also has a little more hold to it, which means you get to use less hairspray. SHOW Beauty’s Working Texture Spray has all of the above, but with the most divine yummy smell (think pears and vanilla) so for me, it kinda has the edge on the other two. Used in conduction with their Volume Mist, we are talking seriously big hair! And never underestimate the power of a mousse – check out my post here for my favourite mousses. Long hair girls – listen up – a mousse may feel like the old fashioned option, but for unbeatable hold, it’s still your (hair’s) best friend.
Best Hairspray – Elnett, iconic, classic, reliable, superfine – there are just so many reasons why I love this. (My fave is the Flexible version, but that’s because I play with my hair so much). Others that get a mention are the Moroccan Oil Luminous Hairspray, which gives just enough hold without feeling crispy, but here again, SHOW Beauty’s Working Texture Spray steals the show does a great job too (see what I did there? haha!)
Best Hair Perfume – yes that really is a thing! And if the beautiful scent that runs through all the SHOW Beauty hair products is anything to go by, it’s a big thing. My faves have been the Herra Hair Protect Spray, which not only scents the hair but also protects it too, and the Percy & Reed Shine & Fragrance Spray, which comes in such cute packaging too!

Special Mentions – And can I just take a second to highlight a couple of loves that will come as no surprise to those familiar to my beauty ramblings. Philip B Russian Amber Imperial Shampoo – yes, it will break the bank, but yes, you will have the most luxurious shampoo that I have yet to try. And secondly, Rahua Finishing Treatment is the styling product I turn to again and again to give my hair the definition and gravitas it needs.
Phew! So there’s a trawl through some of my favourites hair products. Now it’s your turn…let me know if there’s anything in this vast list of things I’m missing, that my hair needs and that will transform my hair to the hair of dreams!
Leave me your suggestions in the comments below – can’t wait to see what you have in store for me!
