These days, it seems it’s just not enough to plan a detox after some self-imposed over-indulging. A January New-Year-New-Year clichéd detox just isn’t going to cut any more. To be really up-to-date, you need to have put yourself through a pre-tox too. Suffer before you enjoy seems to be the mantra, then suffer again to pay penance for your partiality to the odd mince pie, Christmas pudding and that extra roast potato! Even before Christmas hits the decks, I’ve an unplanned extended weekend trip on the cards which takes me to warmer climes with a large group of friends. Lucky me, yes? Well, yes and no. I thought I had till my birthday in January to lose the extra pound or two that has slowly crept up and taken residence around my midriff, but now I’m thrown into panic mode as I face the prospect of baring (nearly) all as I slip into a bikini in front of rather too many friends for my liking.
So I’m pre-toxing with the help of some fresh fruit, veg and chlorella to ensure I’m flat of tummy and full of energy for Marrakech. Witness the rather splendid basket, nay, hamper that arrived at my doorstep, overflowing with the best that nature has to offer; from pineapple to lettuce, spinach to kiwi, no grocery shop shelf left unturned. The message is clear; it’s time to get green juicing, no doubt about it. Well, if it’s good enough for the likes of Miranda Kerr and Rose H-W, then who am I to argue?
Key to the greenness of it all was the inclusion of the Sun Chlorella tablets also thrown in the the blender along with the fruit and veg. Not only do they add the requisite green colour to make me feel oh-so-healthy and greener-than-thou, but this Japanese superfood, a single-celled green algae packed full of nutrients and amino acids, gives the body a supercharged dose of iron and B12. It’s also rich in Vitamin D and even better, aids the liver in detoxifying the body, reducing the likelihood of a hangover by upto 96%!
So into the blender went the following, in no particular order:
- One and a half cups of water
- Half a banana
- A couple of lettuce leaves
- A couple of celery stalks
- A couple of cups of spinach
- Juice of half a lemon
- A pear
- An apple
- 15 tablets of Sun Chlorella
- and I would have put in half an avocado, if Mr H hadn’t used up all the avocados the night before making a huge pot of a guacamole, but that’s another story….
And in spite of it it being so green, it was actually quite yummy. Even Mr H, after gingerly sipping at a glass, downed the whole thing with a smile.
So next weekend, if you bump into me, don’t offer me a drink, a biscuit or even a square of dark chocolate! I’ll be downing the green stuff from morning to night. Any likeness to Miranda Kerr after that will be completely intentional.
PS – my blender of choice is the Vita-Mix – if you fancy a blog post about this magical indispensable kitchen whizz, let me know in the comments below.
